I Suck!

Filed under: Uncategorized — by lannylee @ 1:32 pm

I apologise for my complete and utter rubbishness, I promised to update and then didn’t. I’m definitely going to get nothing but a lump of coal in my stocking from Santa this year.

Any-hoo, moving on. We have come on leaps and bounds in our house lately with all the decorating, we now have new (colour co-ordinated) curtains in the front room and, and curtains in the spare room (well it only took 15 months) so that now when guests stay over we won’t have to tape brown paper up to the window to stop them being blinded at 6am when the sun streams through the window at the back of the house, we are, however, not quite out of the woods, as I in my wisdom have decided that the perfectly nice cream linen curtains need to be dyed navy so that they better contrast with the rug and sofa bed cover we have from Ikea (tried to find a link to a picture of the bed cover but can’t, take it from me though it’s really nice), so I’m really making a rod for my own back, but the housing market being what it is we’ll be stuck where we are for the next 5-6 years, so I might as well make the house look like I want it to.

I am very excited as this year I will be participating in for the first time the patented Weetabix Holiday Card Exchange! I love getting Christmas cards, but don’t tend to get many now as where I work people usually just send an e-mail saying “Merry Christmas, we’ve made a donation to charity this year instead of sending cards” which is great in a Bob Geldof type way, but I still like getting cards, so this year I will get loads – yippee.

Plus I have these great things to hang them up with, I am such a sucker for kitschy Christmas crap!

Also we’re going to buy our tree this weekend, a little early I know, but this is our first real Christmas in this house and I want to make the most of it, hopefully some nice pictures as well, that is if Saffi doesn’t pull it down in the first five minutes.

That’s all for now, but I will update tomorrow, I promise, cross my heart and hope to die, stick a needle in my eye, I always thought that was a little gruesome for children to be saying, but I suppose it did me no harm, hey no sniggering at the back!

Hello – anyone still out there??

Filed under: Uncategorized — by lannylee @ 4:06 pm

Well, where to start – it seems I have become somewhat lackadaisical (I love that word!) in my blogging posting of late (I can’t really call what I do blogging, not sure why?) and so am back with a flourish to announce that I am going to try my bestest to post more frequently, at least five four three times a week.

Well let’s catch up shall we?

It’s been all go in the LannyLee household lately, we’ve been on a mission to decorate since we had our 1-year assessment from the house builders and had all the annoying little cracks in our plaster work patched up. We have been given the green light to decorate and so have jumped in with gusto to find the perfect shade of paint to go with the wallpaper we had bought, and to find a suitable shade of red for the kitchen, as we have some funky, not to mention cheap and cheerful plates that we are basing the colour scheme of the kitchen on. We eventually settled on Moroccan Red
and there’s enough left to even do the downstairs loo. (well there is a recession on, waste not want not!) We have chosen a colour called Mushroom for the bedroom, living room and landing, (I’d link to the colour on the H0mbase website, but I can’t seem to find it) luckily there was an offer on 3 for 2 on all tins of 2.5L so we managed to get six tins of paint for £45 (which my mum gave us the money for), even better we managed to get two for free as despite pre-ordering and paying in advance for the five tins the muppets at said DIY store managed to put them on the shelf and consequently sold two of them. Cue Lanny getting very annoyed and an extremely apologetic service manager offering to refund the two tins and urgently re-order them – score! Six tins of paint for £21.98, brilliant!

Oooh, before I forget – does anyone have a good pea and ham soup recipe (I’m looking at you Stephie ), the only ones I can find seem to be for pea soup with ham added and that’s not what I want. If you do please e-mail me lannylee_diaryland at hotmail dot com – thank you.

I finally got around to using the lovely spa voucher N got me for my birthday way back in January and since it had to be used by December the 1st I though I’d book it for last weekend. It was at the lovely Bannatyne health centre in Peterborough and came with 2 all day passes to the gym facilities including the steam room, sauna and swimming pool etc, so while I went off for a lovely back massage N did a little workout and we both enjoyed a nice Jacuzzi and swim for the rest of the afternoon, it was much needed and we both came out feeling relaxed and refreshed, which then allowed us to tackle painting the kitchen, though not alas the downstairs loo – baby steps people, baby steps, I’m not bloody Carol Smillie!

We had a brilliant day in our office for Children in Need, we were going to have the usual “if you give us a quid you can come in your own clothes” type thing, however one of the guys in our logistics team said that if we raised £200 between our three offices he’d come in for the day dressed as a women. So everyone said they’d give whatever they could, however me being a bit skint (what else is new) I said I’d bake some cakes to sell and the proceeds could go towards it, I asked for suggestions and ended up baking: Lemon drizzle cake, brownies, flap-jacks and chocolate cornflake cakes. The last two were specially requested as we have a girl in our office who is gluten intolerant and I didn’t think it was fair to make all this yummy stuff if she couldn’t have any, plus everyone likes a good cornflake cake, don’t they??

The cakes went down a storm and at 25p a go I managed to raise about twenty quid to go towards to final total, so all in all we raised £430 – not bad and we’re trying to get the company to match it, but I won’t hold my breath.

Well I think that’s enough for now and I promise to be a bit more frequent with the posting.

A smidgen of emotion, with some flour for good measure!

Does this Hovis advert make anyone else cry?

It’s been on TV in the UK for the last month or so and every time I see it I get a little bit teary. If you’re reading this in the US, Hovis is a brand of to be honest, pretty crappy, bread we have here in the UK. I wouldn’t feed it to the ducks, but they do make cracking adverts, so I guess we can give them that. Just about.

I’m not sure what exactly it is about the advert that gets me, so have a watch and answers on a postcard (or in the comments, I’m not fussy) as to what you think it is, cos’ I’m buggered if I can work it out.

Pictures soon, I promise!

Green eyed monster!

Filed under: Uncategorized — by lannylee @ 10:48 am

I had a nice post all planned in my head yesterday, about our holiday and a funny smear on the inside of our car windscreen that looks like a swallow, it really does, it’s just uncanny, I’ve actually restrained myself from cleaning it because I don’t want to wipe away the swallow. It’s so sweet.

However, a little visit from N’s friend G last night totally wiped away my good mood and has replaced it with something I’m just not used to feeling. Bitterness and jealousy, it’s not pleasant. I mean we’ve all felt jealous at some point, or perhaps envious would be more accurate – which is the sin?

Ok, Dictionay.com says that Jealousy is: jealous resentment against a rival, a person enjoying success or advantage, etc., or against another’s success or advantage itself. and Envy is: a feeling of discontent or covetousness with regard to another’s advantages, success, possessions, etc.

So I guess it’s a bit of both, but anyway enough rambling, the point is G came round to tell us that his fiancé is pregnant – they already have two children, why do they want a third, that’s just greedy, surely? N and I want children so badly, but at the moment we’re just flat broke, we can barely support ourselves and there’s no way on earth we could afford to bring a little baby into the world. Well, unless it didn’t need feeding or clothing etc, but I’m pretty sure there’s a law somewhere that says if you have a child you need to feed it, but I’ll read up & let you know!

I don’t like feeling this way, but I guess it’s only human, it’s not much fun being in debt up to your eye balls and with the way the banks are going we might not even have a house soon, (ok I’m being a little melodramatic, but it’s my blog and I’ll cry if I want to) we’re just sick of being broke & working just to keep our heads above water. I’m even thinking that we might have to post-pone the wedding because I can’t justify spending £5 grand (which is cheap as weddings go) when we have a credit card that we owe that same amount on. I haven’t mentioned any of this to N because it would just destroy him, he’s not very financially minded and really doesn’t get this while credit crunch thing, he just thinks we’ll be ok & if we just buy less beer & crisps it’ll all work out in the end – I wish it was that easy.

I’m sorry this has been a totally whinge, I had wanted my first post back to be a little more light-hearted, but there you go. I’ll try better next time, promise & as soon as I get my arse in gear there’ll be pictures of Mickey as well!

I’ll try to update while I’m away, but I don’t know what the internet access will be like in the apartment, but there will be tonnes of pictures, that I can promise!

Howdy partners!

Filed under: Uncategorized — by lannylee @ 11:12 am

Wow, has it really been that long since I’ve posted? (Looks guiltily from side to side, while rapidly thinking up a plausible excuse) I’ve been super busy, honest! Work has been mental and so when I get in it’s all I can do to have a shower and eat some cereal for dinner before sloping off to bed, sometimes I love my life!

But that’s no excuse for not posting here, but now I actually have something to tell you (she says with an air of triumph (and just a hint of smugness)!), it is only two more days til my summer holiday, two whole weeks in Florida, soaking up all the tacky, gaudy, glitteriness Disney World has to offer, but me being me, even a simple thing as a holiday that has been booked for FOURTEEN months was not without drama.

I’m sure most of you will have either read or heard about the XL Leisure Group going into administration, and guess who we booked our holiday with………that’s right, who else would Lanny, the unluckiest person in the world have booked her holiday with? So much panic ensued on Friday morning as my mum had to send the children to school while trying to keep a straight face and not let on to them that there was anything wrong, all while trying to explain while daddy wasn’t at work, and had been locked in the office on the telephone since 7.30am, desperately trying to et hold of someone, anyone to help and see if there was anything we could do to salvage our holiday.

Meanwhile N and I drove to work in blissful ignorance, we had both heard the news, but as the report said it was XL Leisure and we knew the holiday had been booked with Travel City, we just assumed that we’d be ok. That was until we got the phone call from my mum to tell us. I even went as far to tell her to “sod off” as I thought she was either joking or had just been mistaken, but no such luck. We both continued the drive to work in complete silence, both of us too shocked to say anything,

Now I realize that some of you might be thinking, “steady on there Lanny, you’re being a little dramatic, it’s only a holiday, no-one died” Well ordinarily I’d have agreed with you, but we’d been looking forward to this for over a year, and it’s been a bit grim in the LannyLee household this year, as it usually is the first year, or two just after you’ve bought a new house, money’s a bit tight and it’s been stressful to say the least, so this holiday was keeping us going.

Meanwhile my step-father had been trying to call Travel City who we booked the holiday with and they had simply un-plugged their phones, he then tried to call ATOL (thankfully as we’d booked a package we were protected, so if worst came to worst at least we’d get our money back) and they were very sympathetic, but due to the sheer volume of calls they were getting all they could offer was to send out forms to let us submit a claim for a refund.

Frantic phone calls back and forth, between, N and I and my mum and I all trying to come up with a bright idea what we could do to get a new holiday. This next bit’s a bit complicated, so I apologise in advance. N works with a girl, whose sister works for Monarch. So this girl’s sister called her to say they’d all just been in a big meeting and they and several other travel agencies were under instructions to get all the people who had booked holidays with XL Leisure, new holidays, now this was at about 9am, and it wasn’t due to be made public for a bit, so we had a tiny window of opportunity, I call my mum straight away and told her to get into a travel agency quick and get a new holiday, as ATOL were covering the cost under the insurance policy

So, my stepfather, the superhero that he is ran around like a lunatic and managed to book us another holiday with Virgin, they were the first one’s on the travel agency at 10am, and while they were sat finalizing the details of our new holiday dozens more people came in to do the same, see it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.

So we have a brand spanking new holiday to the Bahama Bay Resort Woo-hoo!!!!!

I feel genuinely sorry for all the people who have lost their holidays and haven’t been able to find alternatives, but I’m just thankful that we’ve been able to sort ourselves out. I don’t think I could have faced the kids after them having been told, fours days before their holiday, that it was cancelled.

Wow, that was a little more long winded than I intended, never mind, moving on.

In my last post I mentioned some crap about the fuck-wit known as MG, well I can safely report that I have told him ion no un-certain terms that he can piss off, and not to bother me again. N and I aren’t perfect, but I’m putting the problems we’ve been having down to the stress and strain of living with his parents for a year prior to buying a house and moving in, coupled with the money issues of buying and paying for a house and therefore being skint for the last year, but hopefully things will lighten up in the new year as we’ve got some stuff we’ve been paying off that’s due to finish, so there’ll be a bit more cash flying around and we might even be bale to afford a night out now and then!

I promise to up-load tonnes of pictures from the holiday, we bought a new memory card and so our total picture capability if approx 18,000 pictures, I think it’ll be enough……hopefully.

See you all soon, when I back all sun-tanned, well maybe a bit pinker.

LannyLee.

Arrgghhhhh!!!!

Originally uploaded by LannyLee

Hey, I’ve not ranted for a while (I was wondering why I was feeling a bit weird!) a little thing popped up on my screen for a diet plan website & so sadist that I am I entered my details, out of interest it was: 9 stone (57 kilos/126lbs) and 5ft 4″ (1.62m) and it gave me a BMI of 22.

Now if you look at the picture above this lands me smack in the middle of the Ideal category, however they have recommended that I aim to reduce my BMI to 20, which according to the diagram puts me right on the cusp of Ideal & Underweight & so why didn’t they just say “You’re a healthy weight, well done!” etc, but no they’re just thinking of the cash so they tried to tell me I needed to lose weight and sell me a diet plan for £2.99 per week (approx US$6)

Ummmm, no I don’t think so!

Now, I’m pretty level headed where my weight is concerned and so can see this for what it is, marketing, money grabbing bullshit, but what if I was suffering from body issues or was anorexic.

This is just irresponsible if not downright stupid!

So I’m going to be super British & write them, a strongly worded letter (or in my case an e-mail) I’ll post it here soon along with the reply, when & if I get one.

——————————————————————————————
Copy of the E-mail I sent:

Nicole,

I’m sorry to be directing this at you, however I cannot find a contact option on the diets page and so I’m hoping that as Editor you will be able to forward this on to the relevant person.

Earlier today I entered my details into the diet page section of the Life & Style pages, (I believe they are sponsored by Tesco Diets) I do not need to lose weight but I was hoping that they would be able to offer some healthy recipes that I could try. I entered my details (5ft 4”, 9 stones) and was given a BMI of 22, which according to the diagram shown put me right in the middle of the Ideal weight category, however they then went on to recommend that I subscribe to a particular diet plan at a cost of £2.99 per week in order to reduce my BMI to 20, which again according to the diagram puts me on the cusp of Ideal and Underweight.

Luckily, I have no issues with my weight or indeed my body image, however if I was a different person, a younger more impressionable person, this might lead me to believe I was overweight, which is frankly irresponsible, if not downright stupid on your part.

I understand that MSN do not control this, however you are allowing it to be run via your website and so I believe you are required to take responsibility for the content, regardless of the origin.

Please contact me via the following e-mail address to notify me of the action you intend to take on this matter: myrealname@hotmail.com

Kind Regards,
LannyLee

It’s that time of year again, where you need to take a long hard look at yourself and ask…….. Do you have the X-factor?

I know, I know, it’s wrong for me to be this excited about a reality TV show, but it has a double meaning for me as it also means……….IT’S ALMOST CHRISTMAS!!!

A break from the emotional rollercoaster that is my life!
